The most important factor to consider for getting great looking abs, is body fat percentage. In other words what percent of your body mass is fat.
We can divide our body mass into two parts, the organs and muscles which make up our lean body mass, and then fat which makes up the fat body mass. We can exercise our abs to death, but if we have to large of fat body mass, our abs will not look good. In fact, building ab muscles when we have to much fat body mass will only make our stomachs look worse because the muscles will push out the layer of fat covering our abs.

There are several ways to reduce your body fat percentage and all of them have to do with reducing your calorie intake enough to force your body to use its fat stores to make up the calorie deficit but not so much that your body resorts to using its lea muscle tissue to close the calorie deficit.
You can lose weight and still increase your body fat percentage if you exercise so much that you force your body to burn lean muscle tissue for energy. So the secret to really reducing your body fat percentage is to push your metabolism as high as you can while reducing your calorie intake to the maximum rate your body can convert fat to energy.
